Position Overview

Lydian is looking for a 6-month Pilot Process Engineering Co-op for Spring 2026 to support Lydian’s pilot plant design, build, and operations. You will collaborate with Lydian’s reactor and process engineers to improve automation, controls, and operability of the syngas pilot. You will assist in the design, fabrication, and commissioning of Lydian’s Fischer-Tropsch pilot.

This is an hourly position based in Boston, MA and has a minimum commitment of 6-months.

Responsibilities

Develop and maintain SOPs for syngas pilot reactor operations.
Collaborate with process engineers to implement controls and automation sequences for the pilot plant operation.
Use process engineering principles to troubleshoot and resolve test upsets.
Analyze pilot data and prepare reports to document reactor operating performance and comparison against modeled expectations.
Collaborate with pilot plant design engineers to develop detailed P&ID, controls narratives, and cause and effect diagrams for fuel synthesis pilot.
Collaborate with other teams to integrate requirements, share insights, and solve technical challenges.

Qualifications

B.S. or M.S. candidate in Chemical Engineering or related field.
Solid fundamentals in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and chemical process engineering principles.
Familiarity with chemical process P&IDs and cause and effect diagrams.
Experience with chemical plant PLC and HMI programming software and operation interfaces.
Experience analyzing chemical process experimental data and performing heat and mass balance and reaction equilibrium calculations.
Desire to work in a fast-paced environment and solve interesting technical problems

Position Overview

Lydian is looking for a 6-month Materials Science R&D Co-op for Spring 2026 to develop, manufacture, and characterize high temperature materials for use in sustainable fuel reactor systems. You will interface with engineers and scientists across various domains in order to inform your experimental design and research priorities.

This is an hourly position based in Boston, MA and has a minimum commitment of 6-months.

Responsibilities

Own and execute advanced R&D projects with guidance from Lydian engineers pursuing new paths for materials development
Use advanced characterization techniques (XRD, SEM, electrical property measurements, oxidation/corrosion analysis) to develop understanding of materials and degradation mechanisms. Work with external partners who can perform some techniques under our guidance
Build key reactor components using repeatable, scalable manufacturing techniques, including input and experimentation to explore improvements and alternatives to existing techniques
Frequent use of high temperature furnace equipment to produce different materials
Support other team members in materials compatibility experiments, materials selection, and characterization
Assist in equipment setup, maintenance, and SOP generation.

Qualifications

B.S. or M.S. candidate in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Mechanical Engineering
Hands-on, proactive mentality when it comes to lab work and pushing ideas forward
Interest in high-temperature materials science. Experience in high temperature materials like refractory alloys, advanced ceramics, and superalloys preferred but not necessary.
Interest in building, running, upgrading, and/or maintaining materials test equipment. Experience in basic prototyping, machining, fabrication, or similar is a plus.
Experimental planning skills including methodical and efficient DOEs to achieve project goals
Experience documenting experimental procedures, collecting data and performing statistical analyses of datasets
Focus on safety and assessing/mitigating risks when running experiments in a lab
Desire to work in a fast-paced environment and solve interesting technical problems

Position Overview

Lydian is looking for a 6-month Catalyst Development R&D Co-op for Spring 2026 to design, synthesize, and develop catalyst and coating materials, including chemical synthesis, slurry formulation, monolith coatings, and reactor testing, as well as optimization and scale-up of these methods to enable pilot-scale demonstrations. You will interface with engineers and scientists across various domains in order to inform your experimental design and research priorities.

This is an hourly position based in Boston, MA and has a minimum commitment of 6-months.

Responsibilities

Synthesis of novel catalyst formulations to meet demanding reactor requirements (operation for 1000+ h at 1000+ °C)
Development of slurry coatings with different powders, binders, rheology modifiers and solvents
Reactor testing to efficiently identify the most promising formulations for further development
Scale-up of promising formulations to coat large substrates (catalyst monoliths > 5 in long)
Working effectively with partners, including automotive catalyst suppliers, to develop scalable manufacturing techniques
Using advanced characterization techniques to develop understanding of materials and degradation mechanisms, and working with external partners who can perform some techniques under our guidance
Collaborating with the other projects to understand and incorporate requirements and cooperatively solve problems

Qualifications

B.S. or M.S. candidate in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related major

Position overview

Lydian is looking for an R&D/Pilot Plant Operations Manager to be the principal steward of our 24,000+ SF research laboratory and pilot-scale process facility. Reporting directly to the CTO, this role will ensure uninterrupted operation of critical utilities and equipment, champion environmental health and safety (EHS) compliance, and deliver best-in-class facilities support to a multidisciplinary R&D team.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned, hands-on operator who balances strategic oversight with the willingness to roll up their sleeves when issues arise and is willing to challenge vendors and contractors to provide the required service beyond the status quo. Attention to detail, pride in maintaining a clean and organized facility, and technical roots are highly desirable qualities for this role.

Key responsibilities

Facility & equipment reliability
- Oversee daily operation and preventive maintenance of electrolyzer, HVAC systems, compressed-gas distribution, chilled-water, bulk gas supply, and R&D/pilot systems.
- Administer a computerized maintenance-management system, analyze trend data, and coordinate vendor service contracts.
Logistics & materials handling
- Manage shipping, receiving, and safe movement of laboratory equipment, hazardous materials, and consumables.
- Maintain inventory of critical spares and implement 5S/lean practices across workspaces.
EHS & regulatory compliance
- Serve as site EHS lead, maintaining SDS libraries, executing LOTO/hot-work/confined-space programs, and coordinating periodic audits with external consultants as necessary.
- Liaise with municipal, state, and federal authorities (OSHA, EPA, MA DEP, Boston Fire Department) to maintain all required permits.
Capital projects & space planning
- Scope utility upgrades (electrical, gases, water), prepare bid packages, manage contractors, and track schedules and budgets through commissioning.
Administrative & training duties
- Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs), access-control protocols, and onboarding materials for new users.
- Track key performance indicators (uptime, mean time to repair, maintenance spend) and report monthly to leadership.

Qualifications

5-10+ years of experience in facilities management.
Prior exposure to laboratory, pilot plant, or industrial plant operations with high-temperature, gas-handling reactor systems.
Massachusetts refrigeration, electrical, or hoisting license; DOT hazardous-materials shipping certification; or First-Responder/CPR training preferred.
Fluency in Excel, including budget and project tracking.
